Several churchyards in Groningen have been entirely restored thanks to a visual arts project called ‘Kerken in het Groen’ (churches in the green). The old churchyards in Groningen are unique because the gravestones are inscribed not just with names and dates but with many interesting, sometimes humorous, poetic quotes and epitaphs.
Thanks to a sequel project, ‘Op Hoogte Gedacht’, seven international artists created artworks for six historic churchyards with the objective of drawing attention to their uniqueness and increasing an appreciation for them.
