International conference organized by the University of Groningen, Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken (Groningen Historic Churches Foundation), Museum Catharijneconvent, Future for Religious Heritage Brussels, Jewish Cultural Quarter. In partnership with: International Network for Interreligious Research and Education (INIRE). This conference is held in the Remonstrantse kerk in Gronningen from Wednesday 19. June till Friday 21. June.
'Religious Heritage in a Diverse Europe'
Van 19 tot en met 21 juni organiseert de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen een internationale conferentie in samenwerking met de SOGK, Museum Catharijneconvent, Joods Cultureel Kwartier Amsterdam en de Europese samenwerkingsorganisatie Future for Religious Heritage. De titel is ‘Religious Heritage in a Diverse Europe’. De conferentie richt zich op academici en professionals uit de erfgoed- en museumwereld, en zoomt in op de vraag wat de rol van religieus erfgoed kan zijn in een seculariserende en veranderende wereld. Kan erfgoed een platform bieden voor dialoog en betekenis? De conferentie sluit inhoudelijk aan bij de doelstellingen van ‘Feest! In Oost en West’, het project over het immaterieel erfgoed van religieuze feesten dat de SOGK als sluitstuk van het jubileumjaar oplevert in december, in en rondom kerk en toren van Garmerwolde.
The religious makeup of European societies has been significantly changing over the past few decades. At the same time that more people identify as non-religious, new arrivals and conversion mean that the religious landscape of Europe is becoming increasingly more complex. These dynamics simultaneously enrich and challenge organizations, government agencies and scholars engaged with maintaining and promoting cultural heritage.
The conference aims to establish encounters between scholars and professionals. Therefore, the conference sessions offer a rich mix of academic research and practices from the heritage field. Practices heavily impacted by the disappearance of religious knowledge, the importance of religious literacy for future preservation, and the pivotal role of volunteers in the maintenance of religious heritage.
